Sant Pere de Cervera is first mentioned in the second half of 11th century. Protection and defence needs, as well as religious spirit, are the reasons why it was built as a church fortress, simple and austere. In 1081, Guillem Ramon de Cervera and his wife Arsendis, gave this church to Ripoll monastery, which established a Benedictine priory. The church of Sant Pere el Gros is one of the best examples of Catalan medieval architecture adopting a circular floor plant. (Source: Guia Històrica de Cervera)
