Another Forgotten Wreck of the First World War, the topsail schooner Esther of the Westcott Fleet at Plymouth, 20 m in length. Located at the south side of Dittisham Creek in Devon, UK.
A working boat with a remarakably long career, she was requisitioned by the Admiralty for service during the conflict, though few details of her activities are currently known. The vessel was thought to have been converted to a house boat and renamed as Irene in 1931.
Esther apparently featured a cross-eyed female figurehead that, despite many decades of successful work, was thought to be unlucky by her new owner Mrs Tapley sometime after the war. Mrs Tapley reportedly suffered a stroke within 24 hours of this observation, soon after which the wreck was blown ashore and hulked during a gale at the place where the wreck now lies.
