Excavation Unit 002 located on Lot 38 within the Old Salem National Historic Landmark District, Winston-Salem, NC. This an exploratory unit located just south of the previously identified opening to a pottery kiln built in 1811 under the supervision of Salem’s master potter Rudolf Christ (Hartley & Hartley: 2007). This 5 x 3.5 ft unit was excavated in 2016 in preparation for an upcoming block excavation designed to locate the rest of the kiln and explore issues of technological change and identity within the Moravian community of Salem. Numbered annotations on the model describe each feature or stratum and indicate the order of deposition–from the most recent (1) to the oldest (6).
