Third Intermediate Period (ca. 1070-945 BCE) faience 18 cm wing to wing 7.5 cm tall On loan Harer Family Trust Collection.
In the Later Periods of Egyptian history, (Third Intermediate Period – Ptolemaic Period: 1110 – 30 BCE), an important part of the imagery of mummies involved attaching amulets to their linen bandages. These amulets could impart powers or gifts on the deceased person in their journey into the afterlife. The scarab pectoral was one of the most significant and found on most mummies with amulets. Its presence signified the warmth of the sun resting on the mummy’s chest, giving it a vitality to wake to a new form of existence.
