Nearly 3,000 images were used to create this photogrammetry model of a Fairey Barracuda recovered from the Solent. The aircraft was recovered through a Ministry of Defence licence under the Protection of Military Remains Act and now forms part of a project to restore an aircraft by the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton.
The examination of the aircraft is giving insights into wartime production contingencies across different aircraft manufacturers, and the variations in aircraft types and their development. Additionally, the archaeological evidence, the archival, and oral histories from the aircrews, the recorded losses related to the airfield, and other archaeological finds in the vicinity, show the realities of wartime operational training by units based in Hampshire.
