The 282 ft wooden propeller Fedora was built in 1889 in West Bay City, MI. The bulk carrier had a wood hull with iron strapping. It was powered by a triple expansion steam engine with two scotch boilers. On September 20, 1901, the Fedora was bound for Ashland, WI from Duluth to pick up a load of iron ore when it caught fire from a kerosene lamp that fell in the engine room. Captain Frank A. Fick beached the vessel on a sandbar just offshore allowing the lifeboats to be launched. The 17-man crew, including the captain and two passengers) managed to escape in the lifeboats, while the Fedora burned to the water’s edge. (From Wisconsin Shipwrecks.org) Today the bottom and parts of the sides of the ship lie in shallow water off the Buffalo Bay Campground. The model was created from 3,582 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman and Ken Merryman on two DPV dives in the 2023 season.
