This wooden sculpture was originally created for the Chapel of Intentions of the Way of the Cross in Heiligenkreuz, which consists of 14 stations. According to ancient Christian tradition, the Stations of the Cross can also be prayed for the poor souls in purgatory. This sculpture reminded the faithful of this possibility in a sensual way. Purgatory is represented by a conglomerate of tongues of fire. The deceased Poor Souls (2 women - 4 men) protrude from the tongues of fire to varying degrees. This indicates the different degrees of redemption. Damnation is not intended. The gilding indicates the possibility of redemption - liberation. The sculpture from 1731 was possibly made by Giovanni Giuliani and is part of the art collection of Heiligenkreuz Abbey. Limewood; W 79 cm; H 52 cm; 1731
