Figure of a Saint 17th c. Unknown sculptor
In the second half of the seventeenth century, a new trend in sculpture emerged, mainly under the influence of Northern Mannerism, which came from the Netherlands via Germany. The works often mixed different styles, and the authors began to use Baroque forms, which gradually became widespread. The features of Dutch Mannerism and local traditions characterise the full-length figure of a man from the village of Vodiane. The man is dressed in knight’s armour. His cloak falls in soft folds over his shoulders. He has a high forehead and small, deep-set eyes. The lower part of his face is hidden behind a beard, long curls of hair carefully worked out by the sculptor. Much of the sculpture is destroyed; the left arm and part of the head are missing.
