Figure of an Angel with Raised Right Arm 19th c. Unknown Folk Sculptor Angels form one of the most numerous sculptural groups used by folk artists in their works. Figures of angels were a decorative element of iconostases, altars, and roadside chapels. Folk artists did not have a clear iconographic scheme for their representation in sculpture, so the images were quite diverse: they depicted angelic girls, boys, and small children with and without wings, dressed and naked. An unknown folk artist created an interesting sculptural image from the village of Zhabokriaky. The small figure, carved from a single piece of wood, personifies an angel as a small, cute child with expressive eyes and chubby cheeks, wearing only a loincloth. The figure’s composition is built diagonally, formed by the raised right arm and straightened left leg. The lack of knowledge of the human body anatomy is evident in the reproduction of arms, legs, palms, and fingers. https://collection-lvivgallery.org.ua/en
