Figurine of a gladiator wearing helmet, body armour and greaves, and holding a short sword in his right hand. The left hand would have held a shield, now missing. This heavily armed type is known as hoplomachus or “Samnite”. Representations of gladiators were very popular across the empire. Terracottas such as this could be acquired as souvenirs or given as gifts, for example, at the festival of the Saturnalia.
