The firangi, meaning “foreigner” in Hindi, was an Indian sword that blended European blades with Indian hilts. Emerging around the 16th century, it featured a long, straight blade (often single-edged) imported from Europe or made locally in imitation. The famous swords of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj The ‘Bhavani Talwar’ and ‘Tulja Talwar’, which were battle swords, located at Satara Fort and the Sindhudurg Fort, respectively are also Firangi Swords.
The hilt, for good hand protection, was the Indian basket-hilt design. Popular among various Indian kingdoms for its versatility in both slashing and thrusting, the firangi remains a fascinating weapon for collectors and enthusiasts today.
