New infectious diseases are a major threat to biodiversity. A fungal disease called chytrid, which kills frogs and toads, was first recognised in 1998 and has now spread to 60 countries across the world. In 2013, a new species of the fungus was disccovered in Fire Salamanders. Scientists think chytrid is responsible for the rapid decline of over 500 species of amphibian, including 90 extinctions.
