More model informationThis flow-banded rhyolite sample is from “The Buckets” - a range of folded early Permian volcanics that form the base of the Gloucester Basin in eastern New South Wales. The ‘bands’ are formed by layers of glassy rhyolite interspersed with slightly more crystalline material. Flow-banded rhyolites also commonly show autobrecciation. This brecciation is caused by slow creep of lava that is almost completely solidifed, causing it to fracture in a brittle fashion in particular layers as visible in this specimen.
