ヒレシャコ / Fluted giant clam

水深20mほどのサンゴ礁域に生息する大型の二枚貝。外套膜の褐虫藻に光合成をさせることにより、栄養摂取をする。貝殻の表面にヒレのような突起がある。縄文時代には貝皿として利用していた。

A large bivalve that lives in coral reefs at depths of about 20 meters. It feeds on nutrients through photosynthesis by zooxanthellae on its mantle. They have fin-like projections on the surface of their shells. They were used as shell dishes during the Jomon period.
