Fly on a spartan shield

The story goes a spartan soldier painted a life-sized fly on to his shield when some of his spartan brothers saw this they called him a coward for trying to go unseen when in battle, to which our spartan shield artist replied with “Rather that I may be noticeable; for I come so close to the enemy that my emblem is seen by them in its true size.”. which I read as “oh they’ll notice my emblem when it’s being rammed into there face”.
