More model informationOn the four corners of balustrades that face the Washington Monument in Baltimore sit sculptures created by Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875). They are figural groups depicting allegories of War, Peace, Force, and Order. On the back of the marble post that Force rests upon, someone has written “LAND BACK!”, a reference to the Land Back movement that fights to restore stolen territory to Indigenous nations. The writing highlights how these sculptures reinforce the ideology of colonization and that the land they sit over was forcefully taken from its original inhabitants.
