Formby QL Crew Shelter

Team North conducted a survey of the Formby QL decoy crew shelter in late 2019. This reconstruction was created using information gatehred during the survey.

The Formby bombing decoy complex consisted of QL and Starfish, or SF decoy. The former simulated poorly blacked out buildings, as well as the flashes created by the tram networks, while the latter simulated a target that had already been attacked by aircraft and was ablaze, the aim being to draw in subsequent waves of bombers.

The Formby decoy complex replicated a section of Bootle Docks, including the railway marshalling yard and tramway that was in the area.

The surviving QL crew shelter has been heavily modified and this model was created to outline how the structure appears today and how it would have appeared when constructed.
