The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial was designed by famed landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and completed in 1997. The memorial encompasses 7.5 acres and extends 800’ on the southwest bank of the Tidal Basin. It consists of four rooms representing each of Roosevelt’s four terms in office plus a prologue room, which was added in 2001. The National Organization on Disability funded the prologue room addition to address the lack of explicit acknowledgement of Roosevelt’s disability elsewhere in the memorial. This free-standing bronze statue by California artist Robert Graham depicts Roosevelt seated in the wheelchair he designed himself: a kitchen chair with bicycle-like wheels in the front and smaller wheels in back that replaced the chair legs.
