More model informationFreshwater mussel shells are difficult to 3D model because of the thin margin between the interior and exterior of the shell. I’ve been most successful when I haven’t changed the shell’s position while photographing it. But that meant I couldn’t photograph every part of the shell, because the shell was resting on something. I tried a new technique that has been largely succesful but still needs tweaking: I made a wire frame to hold the shell aloft from my turntable. Portions of the frame are in this model because I wanted to test the idea before I took the time to edit them out.
Shell is from Orange County, NC. Collected with a scientific research permit.
