Cantaloupe is a variety of sugar melon, botanically classified in the genus of cucumbers. Cantaloupe melons usually have a diameter between seven and twelve centimeters. They are rich in fiber, vitamin C and β-carotene. Cantaloupe melon was cultivated in Iran about 5000 years ago, and in the eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Egypt) about 4000 years ago. About 1700 it was grown in Cantalupo in Sabina (eponymous), a small principality north of Rome, from seeds that came from Armenia.
