This is a remote site in the Red Rock District of the Coconino Forest near Sedona, Arizona. These are Sinagua petroglyphs pecked into local basalt volcanic rock. The cupules shown on this boulder have been highly weathered by over 800 years of direct exposure to the weather. The zoomorph glyphs were lightly pecked and are highly weathered. Natural fracturing is progressively breaking this example apart. Many of the upward facing flat surfaces of this highly eroded basalt lava flow from approximately 8 million years ago have Sinagua petroglyphs dating from approximately 1100 to 1300 AD.
