More model informationThis unique cemetery mosque is located within the heart of a-Baleed. The complex unearthed in 1996-1997, contains a typical mosque of the area, with six monolithic pillars that would have supported a flat roof. Notice the extensive ablution area on the east side with two large, stone-lined wells and multiple plaster-lined wash basins. Below the ablution area, note the presence of a series of stone walls attributable to a Late Iron Age date (500-700 AD). To the north and west of the mosque is a large formal cemetery delineated by a low wall, covering 1.5 hectares and containing over 300 burials. The many geometric designs and inscriptions on headstones and some footstones are typical of the Medieval period and date to 1200-1350 AD.
