A fire striker is a tool made of hardened steel that has been used to start fires since ancient times. By striking it against a hard stone, usually flint, small metal particles are scraped off; these ignite due to friction and fall as sparks onto prepared tinder. This creates embers from which a fire can then be kindled. In addition to their practical function, fire strikers were often artistically designed and were part of a person’s personal equipment, much like a modern lighter.
