The monument, which was unveiled on March 14, 2008, is intended to commemorate the 10,000 children, most of them Jewish, who were saved from persecution by the Nazi regime in 1938 by the Kindertransporte to England. On the pedestal the inscription: Dedicated to the British people in deepest gratitude. They saved the lives of 10,000 Jewish and non-Jewish children who escaped Nazi persecution to Britain between 1938 and 1939, the so-called “Kindertransports.” For most of the children, their journey began at Vienna’s Westbahnhof station. “Whoever saves a single human life is as if he had saved the whole of humanity”.
