Type: Igneous intrusive (plutonic) rock
Description: Dark-colored, phaneritic, igneous rock composed of calcic-plagioclase (commonly labradorite or bytownite) and often clinopyroxene (usually augite), with or without olivine and orthopyroxene; the plutonic equivalent of basalt. According to IUGS, gabbrou is a plutonic rock with 0-5% Q, P(A + P) greater than 90%, and plagioclase more calcic than An50.
Labradorite can display an iridescent optical effect (or schiller) known as labradorescence.
Essential minerals: plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene.
Accessory minerals: chromite, magnetite, ilmenite, etc.
