More model informationGalena is a soft lead sulfide mineral, but its cubic crystalline structure makes it difficult to shape. Most of the galena found at Poverty Point is in an “unworked” state, however galena pendants, beads, buttons, plummets, and a gorget have been recovered. There is even a galena pendant that, to some, resembles a bird. While weathered galena is typically found covered with a white patina, fresh surfaces have a shiny silver appearance. In addition to the ornaments, galena may have been used as a pigment in paint.
