Early Christian monastery (OF014-029----) founded at Gallen, Co. Offaly by St. Canoc in 492 AD. This monastic site was excavated in 1934-5 by T. D. Kendrick. About 200 fragments of cross-slabs dating from the 8th/11th-centuries were uncovered by this excavation. Broken sandstone cross-slab measuring 0.49 high x 0.23m wide that has been inserted into the western face of a wall built on the line of the west gable of the excavated church. Roughly rectangular-shaped slab with upper corners rounded, lower end broken off. Upper part of slab bears an equal armed ringed cross in false relief. Below the ringed-cross there is the upper part of a four-petal marigold in an incised circle, the petals sunk into the stone. The lower part of this slab is missing.
