Description: Amphibolite is a medium to coarse grained, weakly foliated to non-foliated, bimineralic dark green rock made up of Hornblende and Plagioclase feldspar. amphibole is often Hornblende, but may be Grunerite, Actinolite, or Tremolite. Amphibolite should not be confused with the metamorphic facies of the same name. Amphibolite is a widespread rock type. Its protolith (parent-rock) can be Basalt, Gabbro, or Ultramafic igneous rock.
Essential minerals: amphibole (Hornblende, Anthophyllite, Cummingtonite), Plagioclase (Andesine-Bytownite).
Non-essential minerals: Ilmenite, Magnetite, Titanite, Epidote, Quartz, Diopside, Garnet (Pyrope-Almandine), Biotite, etc.
