Locality: Rebra, Romania

No.: 1256

Size: 8.5 x 7 x 4 cm

Type: Hypabyssal (subvolcanic) rock

Description: Pegmatite is an exceptionally coarse- and uneven-grained granite, usually found as tabular dikes, lenses, or veins, and varying from a simple composition (quartz with potassic feldspar) to one containing many accessory minerals including rare species rich in Be, B, Cl, F, Li, Mo, Nb, P, S, Ta, Sn, W, U, Zr, and the rare-earth elements (REE); pegmatites form especially at the margins of batholiths and represent the last and most hydrous portion of a magma to crystallize. Pegmatite is a variety of granite, but pegmatitic facies of many other plutonic rocks occur. Gk. pegma, framework (term originally applied to graphic granite).
