The name Garuda id derived from a Sanskrit word. Garuda is depicted as the vehicle of the god, Vishnu. In the Hindu religion, the god Vishnu is one of the three primary gods (trimurti) believed to be the Keepers of the Universe. Garuda is often depicted as having a head, wings, a tail, and a hawk shaped beak, and human-like body, hands, and feet. Garuda is used as the symbol of the Airlangga kingdom in 11th century AD. Inscriptions that were created in the Airlangga era often used Garuda symbols that are engraved at the inscription`s top part, known as Garudamukha lancana. The Garuda symbol is also used by the kings of the Janggala kingdom, which was considered as the successor of the Airlangga kingdom.
