Another of the cluster of prehistoric cup marked rocks found in the Gayles Plantation area of Feldom Ranges, North Yorkshire.

This example was first reported by Stuart Feather in 1972 and subsequently drawn and referenced ‘D19’ in Beckensall & Laurie’s 1998 book, ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale’. Paul and Barbara Brown then referenced the carving ‘FR21b’in ‘Prehistoric Rock Art in the Northern Dales’, noting:

“Irregular-shaped boulder 125 x 123 x 23cm. Approx. 22 cups.”

The cups found on this stone are unusually small (approximately 3cm diameters) for the Feldom area. Two cups towards the southern end also appear to have been placed on a slight raise and directional lighting shows them as having ‘natural rings’....intentional or chance?
