More model information

This is one of the more simple prehistoric cup-marked rocks found in the Gayles Plantation area within Feldom Ranges, North Yorkshire.

Paul Brown discovered the stone beneath vegetation in 1996. It was then documented as ‘D22’ in Beckensall & Laurie’s 1998 publication, ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale’. Later, Paul and Barbara Brown catalogued it ‘FR21c’ in their 2008 book, ‘Prehistoric Rock Art in the Northern Dales’, describing:

“Flat slab measuring 109 x 75 x 13cm. Two cups.”

The carving isn’t a scheduled monument, and was likely to have been found after English Heritage’s ‘Monument Protection Programme’ had finished their surveys in the mid-1990s. What’s scheduled as a small ring cairn can be found roughly 30 meters NE of the stone.

This model displays several features drawn by Beckensall; however, it remains unclear if these markings are natural, artificificial or a combination.

Model created from 32 images captured by Richard Stroud in April 2026.
