Zinc fingers are DNA binding domains that also binds to zinc and are common elements in many transcription factors. Specifically, in this model (ZFP568), we have Cys2His2 zinc fingers. ZFP568 inhibits transcription activity of a placental growth factor 2 (Igf2-P0) during gastrulation. This model illustrates some of the critical features of ZFP568. The tour begins by giving a general overview including outlining the position of where this protein binds to DNA. This is followed by an investigation of the zinc molecule before moving to the A:T rich DNA segment to explore zinc finger 5 and 6 binding. Finally, this tour looks at the magnesium ion and 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane molecule.
Zinc fingers proteins could lead to significant breakthroughs via a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind DNA base identification, transcription processes, assembling of proteins and general regulation frameworks.
