This model is a three dimensional representation of the use of structure contours in geology. The green surface represents a topographic surface, while the pink surface represents the flat plane of a dipping geological surface. Green lines respresent topographic contours of the landform, and pink lines are structure contours of the dipping surface. In this case the contour interval of both topographic and structure contours is 100 metres. Note that because the geological surface is flat (i.e. not curved), structure contours are always straight lines that are all parallel and equidistant horizontally.
Note that the point of intersection where each structure contour meets its topographic equivalent, represents the point of outcrop of the geological surface. The blue line therefore represents the trace of outcrop of the geological surface.
