Fragment of a Roman face vessel. Ceramic; h 10,9 cm; w 9,1 cm. End of 2nd - beginning of 3rd century AD.

In the Roman imperial period, face vessels of this type were used in the cult of the dead and were given as burial objects. The face was probably intended primarily to have an apotropaic effect. The closed eyes, however, indicate that it was meant to represent a dead or sleeping person.
