Gharial Skull (NHMW-Zoo-HS 40.835)3D Model
3D scan of a gharial skull (Gavialis gangeticus). Complete skulls of these animals are very rare, which makes this object quite special. These reptiles are domestic to Nepal and India and live in freshwater rivers. The gharial is one of the longest crocodiles and has the longest snout in relation to the size of its head. Even though their appearance may give another impression, these fish-eaters are no threat to humans.
This skull can not be found in the showrooms, but a gharial pair is shown in Hall 28 of the NHM Vienna. They are Number 70 of the NHM Top 100.
