Maquillaje (Spanish for “makeup”) presents a visual (and social media) cliche, that is, a close-up image of eyeliner and masquera being applied to the eyelid and eyelash. This bas-relief paiting is inspired by social media tutorials that are both very fleeting and a product of the way that we consume media. In a sense, we consume media much in the way we gobble up many bodily delights, that is, with a tinder-esque ambivalence of a swipe to the left or a swipe to the right. This also speaks the transformative, and often self-serving nature of both social media and technology.
“These paintings are painting themselves. They’re looking at you the same time you are looking at them.” -Gina Beavers
