The giraffe is a large African hoofed mammal, and it is the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant on Earth. Its scattered range extends from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south, and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the east. It usually inhabits savannahs and woodlands where it feeds on leaves, fruits, and flowers of woody plants, primarily acacia species. The giraffe stands from 4.3 to 5.7 m tall, with males taller than females. The average weight is 1,192 kg for an adult male and 828 kg for an adult female.
