Locality: Knoden, Germany
No.: 9215
Size: 9.1 x 6.9 x 2.7 cm
Type: Metamorphic rock - foliated
Description: Gneiss is a coarse-grained, foliated, with a coarse grained texture of alternating light (felsic) and dark (mafic) mineral bands; a metamorphic rock that formed deep in the crust beneath forming mountain ranges. The chemical composition may be highly variable, although most gneissose rocks are granitic. Gneiss formed from sediments is termed paragneiss, while those generated from igneous rocks are termed orthogneiss. Like schists, the term ‘gneiss’ is preceded by diagnostic minerals: sillimanite gneiss, garnet gneiss, etc. Its protolith (parent-rock) can be Shale or Granitic rock.
Essential minerals: feldspar, quartz, mica
Non-essential minerals: epidote, apatite, tourmaline, etc.
