God’s House Tower was part of the series of fortifications built to protect Southampton as a consequence of the French Raid in 1338. By the 17th century the need for strong defences declined and by 1707 part of the building was being used as a house of correction. In 1786 it was adopted as the Town Gaol, a role it retained until 1855. You can see a model of the toilets from the gaol here: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/gods-house-tower-debtors-prison-toilet-e1b81de8a2af43928a784ddfb9bf0f51
It now serves as a museum and art gallery.
The building is one of several which has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton using an Leica RTC360 3D Laser Scanner. The model was cleaned and constructed by Neil Cooper.
