This brick Federal-style home belonged to Captain John Gordon and his family and was built in 1818. The structure is a modified hall-and-parlor plan and is one of only two remaining houses from the early history of the Natchez Trace located along the Natchez Trace Parkway. In 1973, the NPS acquired the Gordon House and surrounding property, and by 1974, the home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gordon House served as a landmark for travelers along the Old Natchez Trace, signaling the proximity to Nashville, Tennessee. The Gordon family provided a safe ferry crossing of the nearby Duck River, north of the house, and the home also would have provided a place for travelers to sleep for the night. The 3D model of the basement is from a survey conducted by USF Center for Digital Heritage and Geospatial Information as part of a Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit collaboration with the NPS.
