グラハム・ベルが電話を発明してから14年後となる明治23年、日本初となる電話サービスが東京～横浜間で開始した。ガワ―ベル電話機は開始当初に使用されたもので、送話機を開発したイギリスのガワ―とベルの名を組み合わせて名付けられた。中央のボタンで電話局を呼び出し通話する仕組み。

Japan’s first telephone service was launched between Tokyo and Yokohama in 1890, fourteen years after the invention of the telephone by Graham Bell. The Gower-Bell telephones, named after the inventors Gower and Bell who developed the transmitter, were used when the service first began. One would press the button in the center to call the telephone station and make a call.
