エジソンが音を記録再生する機械を発明したのは1877年のこと。日本には翌年持ち込まれ、外国人により実験公開が行われた。当時は蝋管と呼ばれる円筒形の媒体に録音していた。明治30年代に入ると各地で蓄音機を見せる興行が行われ、機械が発する音声を人々は驚き楽しんだ。

It was 1877 when Edison invented a machine to record and reproduce sound. It was brought to Japan the following year, and experiments were conducted publicly by foreigners. At the time, sound was recorded on a cylindrical medium called a wax tube. In the 1890s, shows that featured the gramophone were performed in various parts of Japan, and people were surprised and entertained by the sound produced by the machine.
