Green-glazed Earthenware Mortar, St. Johns Wreck 3D Model
Three fragments (#’s 2608, 2615, 2706) form part of the base of an earthenware mortar. The assembled piece is 8 centimeters in diameter at the bottom. On the interior, the vessel has an emerald to apple-green glaze. The glaze and the fine, pinkish paste are similar to those of the green-glazed lebrillo, also recovered from the wreck. It is assumed this mortar was used on board the ship for preparing things like spices and medicine.
