In 1840 during the construction of a tunnel near Port Glasgow for the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway, an extremely rare mineral was discovered. It was named ‘Greenockite’ after the landowner, Charles Cathcart 2nd Earl Cathcart, Lord Greenock, a keen amateur geologist who was a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The mineral was once used to create a yellow paint known as ‘cadmium ochre’ which is found in paintings by Claude Monet and Van Gogh.
