Greif 3D Model
The griffin sits on its hind legs and supports itself with the left front paw. The wing on the right side is spread out and turned up. The head with jagged crest and chin-beard has peaked, standing ears and a curved beak. Bronze; 12,5 x 16 cm; 1st century AD.
The griffin is a hybrid of winged lion body and eagle head and has oriental origin. About the Cretan and Mycenaean culture, he came to Greece. As a symbol of strength and vigilance he was used in Greco-Roman art as a guardian figure. In mythology, the griffin was associated with Apollo, Dionysus and Nemesis. The S-shaped ornament in the Carnuntine Griffin indicates the use of a heraldically arranged group in the handle zone of a vessel.
