More model informationThis model of an adult Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) shows the 3D orientations and magnitudes of the different jaw muscles. In the background is a ternary plot that shows these orientations in 2 dimensions. Notice the diversity of orientations of the different temporal and palatal muscles. These reflect the complicated chewing behaviors parrots employ that move the palate and upper beak independent of the lower jaws, a phenomen called cranial kinesis.
