Grotto of the Holy Family on the grounds of the Villa of St. Joseph of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, St. Joseph Ridge, WI. The grotto was designed by Father Paul Dobberstein in 1925. Portions of the grotto were constucted in his studio in West Bend, Iowa and then shipped to La Crosse, WI and transported up to St. Joseph Ridge where the grotto was constructed by Frank Donsky, farm caretaker at Villa St. Joseph. The structure was constructed and decorated using a variety of materials, including limestone, sandstone and rose quartz, and malachite, stalagtites and stalagmites, petrified wood, fosilized bee hives, and colored glass among others.
