19th century guide stone in the wall of Coldstone Barn on Plum Lane at the corner with High Street (A361), Shipton-Under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire, UK.
The stone was erected by the Charlbury Roads Turnpike Trust (from 1800). The central part of the guide stone is white limestone and set slightly into the wall, an outer border of yellow limestone with internal chamfer molding. Lettering, a hand and a border have been lightly carved into the stone and coloured black. The background is white washed possibly onto plastered/mortared layer (unsure of correct terminology here) that has been applied to smooth out the stone. A some stage an effort has been made to break the stone out of the wall without success, the letters and hand to the left of the sign have been defaced by chiseling probably after the end of the turnpike trust (no date recorded, possibly 1880?).
The sign reads:
To. LEAFIELD, (hand pointing to left) ASCOTT, AND CHARLBURY
