Guido Holzknecht monument in Arne Karlsson Park in Vienna’s 9th district. The monument by Josef Heu dates from 1932 and consists of a bust on a stone stele.
Guido Ludwig Holzknecht (1872-1931) was an Austrian doctor and radiologist, professor at the University of Vienna and pioneer of radiology. The pioneers of the time were only slowly becoming aware of the damaging effects of X-rays. However, Guido Holzknecht and Robert Kienböck recognized around 1901 that the damage to the skin depends on the radiation dose administered. As a result of this realization, Holzknecht constructed the first device that could approximately determine the amount of radiation emitted: the chromoradiometer.
